The winter tours we'd book from Munich
For most people, the Gray Line Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Full-Day Trip is the best-value winter tour. It is the most-reviewed Neuschwanstein day trip from Munich on GetYourGuide, rated 4.6★ from 17,185 reviews. If you'd pay more to have both castle tickets included and fewer people on the coach, choose the Gray Line Premium version. For Neuschwanstein only, at a slower pace, the Radius Tours train-based trip is our pick. Between late November and 23 December, Mike's Bike Tours' Neuschwanstein and Christmas Market tour ends with an optional walk through Munich's markets. Families and photographers should go private.
Most Neuschwanstein day tours look alike at first glance. The differences are in the winter details. Some include your castle ticket, and some sell it to you on the bus for cash. Some visit Linderhof, whose grotto is closed all winter. A few spell out what happens when Mary's Bridge is iced over, and most don't.
We read the listings, the winter clauses and the reviews of every tour below, and re-checked ratings and review counts on 26 October 2026. Ratings and prices change daily, so the booking page always has the final word.

How we chose
We started with 14 Neuschwanstein tours from Munich on GetYourGuide and judged them on what makes or breaks a winter visit:
- Castle ticket. Is it included, guaranteed, or left to you? Neuschwanstein is visited only on timed tours, and no tickets are sold at the castle itself.
- How you pay for it. Card on the bus, cash to the guide, or prepaid. This causes more confusion in reviews than anything else.
- Winter clarity. Does the operator say what happens when Mary's Bridge or the shuttle bus is closed? The best ones say so up front.
- Timing. What time do you reach the castle, and when are you back in Munich? It's dark by around 16:30 in December.
- Group size. Large coaches are cheap but slower at every stop. Small groups move faster on short days.
- Reviews. We looked at the volume and the recurring complaints as well as the star rating.
True of every tour: no tour guide is allowed inside Neuschwanstein. You see the interior only on the official timed tour, led by castle staff or with an audio guide. Your guide walks you up, briefs you and meets you afterwards.
Other experiences you might enjoy
A winter week in Munich has room for more than one castle. Linderhof Palace runs its interior tours all winter, and Hohenschwangau Castle sits in the village below Neuschwanstein. The Zugspitze is the reliable snow day, Salzburg and the Berchtesgaden Alps fill a day of their own, and Munich's Christmas markets, beer halls and food tours fill the dark evenings.

| Transport | Coach |
| Meeting point | Sonnenstraße 3, central Munich (look for an "Autobus Oberbayern" coach) |

Why we like it: the Gray Line combo is by far the most-reviewed Neuschwanstein tour on GetYourGuide, it lets you pay for tickets by card, and its operator runs a well-organised day. Reviewers consistently praise the guides.
Winter notes
- Linderhof comes first, in the morning, and you reach Neuschwanstein in the early afternoon. That's a sensible winter order.
- At Linderhof, the Venus Grotto, the park buildings and the fountains are closed or switched off until mid-April. You get the palace rooms and the snowy gardens.
- The tour may only drive through Oberammergau without stopping.
- The listing notes that in winter the opening of Mary's Bridge depends on the weather and the castle administration.
The trade-offs: reviewers mention big groups, a rushed feel with two castles in one day, and around four hours on the coach.
From $88. Availability and final price on GetYourGuide.
Radius Tours Neuschwanstein Castle Full-Day Trip
From $89 · ★ 4.7 (4,427 reviews) · About 10 hours · Reserve now, pay later
Go with Radius if you'd prefer to see one castle properly over two in a rush, and you like the idea of travelling by train with a guide.
| Operator | Radius Tours |
|---|---|
| Duration | About 10 hours |
| Transport | Regional train with a guide (sometimes a private bus instead), plus a local transfer |
| Meeting point | Radius office, Dachauer Straße 4, near Munich Hauptbahnhof |
| Departures | Two morning departures listed, at 9:15 and 10:00; check which runs on your date |
| Castle ticket | Optional; paid on the morning of the tour |
| Cancellation | Free up to 24 hours before; reserve now, pay later |
| Price | Budget, from $89 |
The Radius day trip has a strong rating from thousands of reviews, and it leaves you free time in Hohenschwangau village and at the Alpsee. Reviewers praise the guides' storytelling on the train.
Winter notes
- This winter the Munich–Buchloe line has engineering works, with timetable changes from 13 December 2026. A guide helps with the connections, but the train itself can still be disrupted. The listing says some days run by private bus, so check what's planned for your date.
- The 9:15 departure is back in Munich around 18:30 and the 10:00 departure around 19:15, so don't plan anything tight that evening.
- Bring cash or a card for the castle ticket. Reviewers say the payment arrangements weren't clear enough.
Neuschwanstein Castle Full-Day Trip by Van (8 people max)
From $146 · ★ 4.9 (1,379 reviews) · About 10 hours · Hotel pickup
It suits couples and small groups who want the feel of a private tour at a mid-range price.
| Duration | About 10 hours |
|---|---|
| Transport | Van, with hotel pickup and drop-off in Munich |
| Group size | Maximum 8 |
| Castle ticket | Booked by the operator; pay the guide in cash after the tour |
| Extras | A stop at the Wieskirche, the UNESCO-listed pilgrimage church, and a Bavarian cheese farm |
| Accessibility | Listed as not suitable for people with mobility impairments |
| Price | Mid-range, from $146 |
The van tour has the highest rating of any tour in this comparison with more than 1,000 reviews. A group of eight moves faster through every stop, which matters when the daylight runs out around 16:30.
In winter, seasonal stops keep shorter hours. On this tour the cheese-farm stop runs only Friday to Sunday, with a Bavarian beer hall in Schwangau on weekdays, so check what's included on your date.
Mike's Bike Tours Neuschwanstein by Bus & Munich Xmas Market Tour
From $93 · ★ 4.8 (187 reviews) · About 9 hours, plus an optional market walk
Choose this if you're in Munich between late November and 23 December and want the castle and a Christmas market in one day.
| Operator | Mike's Bike Tours Munich |
|---|---|
| Duration | About 9 hours, plus an optional Munich walk of a little over an hour |
| Transport | Coach, from the operator's Discover Bavaria shop |
| Schedule | Leaves at 8:30, Hohenschwangau at 11:00, guided walk up at 12:30, castle tour at 13:20, leaves at 15:45, back in Munich (Isartor) around 17:45, then the optional walk ends at Marienplatz around 18:55 |
| Christmas market walk | Dates on the booking calendar run from 27 November to 23 December 2026; the walk skips the markets after 24 December |
| Castle ticket | Not included: buy a guaranteed ticket from the guide on the bus, €26.50 per adult (cash) |
| Price | Budget, from $93 |
The Mike's Christmas market tour has the most detailed winter notes of any listing we read. It says outright that the shuttle bus is generally unavailable in winter and the horse carriages usually aren't running, so you'll walk up with your guide. It also asks for sturdy shoes and cash, and advises against fixed plans such as trains or flights before 19:00.
Also from Mike's: a longer Neuschwanstein bus tour with an Oberammergau stop or an alpine coaster (4.9★ from 559 reviews, about 11 hours, from $89), and a private Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day with hotel pickup, which isn't sold on GetYourGuide.
Private Neuschwanstein tours: tickets included, hotel pickup
Choose a private tour if you're a family, travelling with someone who needs a slower pace, or a photographer who wants the first 10:00 castle slot.
| Tour | Operator | Duration | Group | Castle ticket | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private tour to Neuschwanstein from Munich | All Things Bavaria | About 9 h | Private | Timed ticket included | Includes Oberammergau and Ettal Abbey · 5.0★ (24) |
| Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Private Tour | Private Tours Munich | About 10 h | 1–6 (Mercedes V-Class) | Both castles, skip-the-line | Hotel pickup · 5.0★ from only 8 reviews |
| Luxury van tour with a private driver | See listing | About 10 h | Up to 6 | Not included | 1-hour Hohenschwangau stop · 5.0★ (20) |
| Private day trip to Neuschwanstein | My Europe Journey | About 7 h | Private, up to 7–8 | Not included | Driver, not guide; listed as a wheelchair-accessible vehicle |
We've linked the two private listings with 20 or more reviews. The Private Tours Munich day has only 8 reviews on GetYourGuide so far, and we couldn't find the My Europe Journey day there at all, so check recent feedback on both before you commit. Our winter Linderhof combo guide covers the Private Tours Munich day in more detail.
Driver or guide? "Private driver" and "private guide" are different things. A driver gets you there and offers some commentary. A guide adds structured storytelling. Neither can lead you inside Neuschwanstein.

The early-start option: the Half-Day Skip-the-Line Tour meets at Munich Hauptbahnhof at about 07:15, before sunrise in December, and is back by early afternoon. It's a good choice if you want your Munich evening free.
The Premium Small-Group Tour by Train rates well but from only 60 reviews, and the Neuschwanstein, Linderhof Group or Private tour is the weakest-rated tour we compared. In winter, Linderhof's palace interior is the main reason to go there, so we'd skip any combo that lists it as usually exterior only.
Coach, train, van or private: which type suits winter?
| Type | Pros in winter | Cons in winter | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large coach | Cheapest; unaffected by the rail works; often card payment | Slow at stops; around 4 h on the road; rushed combos | Budget travellers, first-timers |
| Train-based group | More scenic; less time stuck in traffic | Exposed to this winter's rail works; later returns | Anyone who only wants Neuschwanstein |
| Small-group van | Faster stops; more personal; extra stops | Often cash for tickets; seasonal stops vary | Couples, small groups |
| Private | You choose the 10:00 slot; flexible viewpoints; the driver waits | Most expensive per person (less so for 4–6) | Families, limited mobility, photographers |
What happens on a winter tour if…
…Mary's Bridge is closed?
The castle tour goes ahead as normal. The official Ticket Centre says the guided tours aren't affected when the bridge is closed. Good guides take you to the viewing platform over the Pöllat gorge below the castle, or down to the Alpsee shore.
…the shuttle bus isn't running?
You walk up the 1.5 km lane with your guide, which takes 30–40 minutes. Tours allow time for it. Wear boots with grip.
…it's 24, 25 or 31 December or 1 January?
The castles are closed, so tours don't run. Check the booking calendar.
…the weather is terrible?
The castle opens in all weathers, so weather refunds aren't standard. Most tours allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so check the forecast the day before.
Booking checklist for a winter tour
- Ticket: included, guaranteed on the bus, or yours to book?
- Payment: card or cash? Bring euros either way.
- Castle slot time: earlier is better for daylight and slack.
- Linderhof: the grotto, fountains and park buildings are closed until mid-April.
- Return time: don't book a dinner or a train before about 19:00.
- Cancellation window: usually 24 hours.
- Clothing: waterproof boots with grip, layers and gloves. Our winter packing list has the details.
Winter Neuschwanstein tours from Munich: FAQ
What is the best Neuschwanstein tour from Munich in winter?
For value, the Gray Line Neuschwanstein & Linderhof Full-Day Trip is the most-reviewed option and rated 4.6 stars. For both castle tickets included and a smaller group, choose the Gray Line Premium tour. For Neuschwanstein only, Radius Tours' train-based day trip is a strong choice.
Do Neuschwanstein tours from Munich include the castle ticket?
Some do and some don't. Premium and private tours often include it. Many budget tours sell a guaranteed ticket on the bus, by card or cash depending on the operator, or leave you to book it yourself. Always check the inclusions before booking.
Do I need cash on a Neuschwanstein tour?
Often, yes. Several tours ask you to pay for the castle ticket in cash on the bus or to the guide, and the horse carriages and some stalls take cash only. Bring euros even if your tour is prepaid.
Are Neuschwanstein tours rushed?
Two-castle combo tours can feel rushed, especially in winter when the days are short. Neuschwanstein-only, small-group and private tours give you more time.
Can I see a Christmas market on a Neuschwanstein tour?
Yes. Mike's Bike Tours runs a Neuschwanstein bus tour with an optional walk through Munich's Christmas markets at the end of the day, from late November to 23 December. Füssen's own Advent market runs on the second and third Advent weekends (4–6 and 11–13 December 2026).
What if Mary's Bridge is closed on my tour?
The castle tour still goes ahead. Guides use other viewpoints instead, such as the viewing platform over the Pöllat gorge just below the castle or the shore of the Alpsee.
