Neuschwanstein Castle above the forest, the goal of a private winter day tour from Munich

Private Neuschwanstein tours from Munich in winter: are they worth it?

Your own driver, your own pace and your own 10:00 castle slot. On short winter days, flexibility counts for more than at any other time of year. Here's when a private tour is worth paying extra for, and the one thing no private guide is allowed to do.

Hotel pickup in Munich Choose the first castle slot of the day Best value for 4–6 people No outside guide may lead you inside the castle
  • 08:00 Ticket Centre in Hohenschwangau opens
  • 10:00 First castle tours, daily from 16 October
  • ~16:30 Dark by around this time in December
  • 30–40 min Walk up to the castle when the bus isn't running
  • 4–6 Group size where private gets close to small-group prices
The short answer

Worth it for families, slower walkers, photographers and groups of four to six

A private tour is worth the extra money in winter if you're a family, travelling with someone who has limited mobility, a photographer, or a group of four to six. You get hotel pickup and the first 10:00 castle slot. Your driver can switch viewpoints if Mary's Bridge is closed, and waits nearby when the shuttle bus isn't running. Know two things before you book. First, some "private" listings are a driver only, with no castle tickets included. Second, no outside guide, private or otherwise, may lead you inside Neuschwanstein. You see the interior only on the official castle tour.

Рowered by GetYourGuide.

Winter changes the maths on private tours. In summer, a big coach tour and a private van reach the same crowded castle. In winter the day is short, and it's dark by around 16:30 in December. The shuttle bus often isn't running, and the bridge view may be closed. Control over your timing, pace and route is worth more on a day like that, and a private tour gives you that control.

The calendar above is for the All Things Bavaria private tour, our all-round pick below. To weigh private tours against coach, train and van days, see our winter day tours compared.

Is it for you?

Who should book a private tour in winter?

Who gains most from going private between November and March.
You are…Why private helps in winter
A family with young childrenDoor-to-door transport, no coach schedule, toilet and snack stops when you need them, and a slower walk up the icy hill
Travelling with limited mobilityShorter walking distances, a driver who waits, and time to use the castle lift (reserve it in advance)
A photographerThe first slot of the day and the best light, plus time to reach the Alpsee shore or the meadow viewpoints if the bridge is closed
A group of 4–6 adultsThe cost per head can come close to small-group tour prices
Short on timeNo waiting for 50 people at every stop, and a faster day
Celebrating somethingA proposal, an anniversary or a once-in-a-lifetime trip deserves the quiet morning castle

Probably not worth it if you're a solo traveller or a couple on a budget. A well-rated small-group van tour of up to 8 people, such as the Neuschwanstein Castle Full-Day Trip by Van (from $146, 4.9★ from 1,380 reviews), gets you most of the benefit for much less. Our comparison of every winter tour type sets the options side by side.

Other experiences you might enjoy

A private driver makes it easy to add stops. Neuschwanstein pairs with Hohenschwangau Castle, Linderhof Palace, Oberammergau and Ettal Abbey. From Munich, the Zugspitze, Salzburg and the city's Christmas markets fill the other days of a winter week.

Private driver or private guide: what's the difference?

Can a private guide come inside Neuschwanstein?

No. You can visit Neuschwanstein's interior only on the official timed tour, which lasts about 30 minutes and is led by castle staff (in German or English) or done with an audio guide. Every operator works this way, however much you pay. Your private guide will:

  • Brief you on the walk up, so the rooms make sense when you see them
  • Wait at the exit and fill in the story afterwards
  • Take you to viewpoints, the village and other stops

How to check you're getting a professional

  • Tour guiding isn't a licensed profession in Germany. Good signs are a voluntary certification such as the BVGD guide certificate and membership of a local guide association.
  • Paid passenger transport is regulated. Professional drivers need a commercial passenger-transport permit (the P-Schein), and the company needs an operator licence. Reputable operators say so on their websites.
  • Read the inclusions word by word. "English-speaking driver" isn't the same as "licensed guide".
Short days, closed paths

Why a private tour suits a winter day

  1. You get the first castle slot. The Ticket Centre opens at 08:00 and the first castle tours start at 10:00. A private tour can put you in the first group of the day, ahead of the coach tours that usually arrive around midday.
  2. You have a plan B for Mary's Bridge. When the bridge is closed for ice and snow, your driver can take you to the Alpsee shore, the Schwangau meadows or the viewing platform below the castle, with no group to negotiate with. Our guide to Mary's Bridge winter closures covers each alternative.
  3. Your driver waits. The shuttle bus doesn't run in snow or ice, so you'll walk up for 30–40 minutes. Private cars can't drive up to the castle, but your driver can drop you in Hohenschwangau village and be waiting when you come down.
  4. You choose the route. If the Plansee road through Austria is closed for avalanche risk, a private driver reroutes via Oberammergau. Until about mid-December 2026 the main road through Schwangau is also closed for roadworks, with a signed detour via Hohenschwangau, so allow extra time.
  5. You stop when you want. Ettal Abbey, Oberammergau's painted houses, the Wieskirche and a coffee in Füssen all fit when the schedule is yours.
  6. You use the daylight well. In December you get roughly eight and a half hours of light. A private tour doesn't spend it waiting for a full coach.

Travelling with children

Private tours for families in winter

  • Children under 18 enter Neuschwanstein free, but they still need a ticket for a timed slot. Book everyone together, because children can't be added to a booking later.
  • Hohenschwangau Castle is different. Under-7s are free, but children aged 7 and over pay a reduced rate. The castle is privately owned and isn't covered by the state's free-for-children rule.
  • Pushchairs and baby carriers aren't allowed inside either castle. At Neuschwanstein you can leave a pushchair in a storage room off the castle courtyard, and there are lockers for all visitors. With a private driver you can also leave it in the van.
  • The walk up takes 30–40 minutes on a steep lane. With small children in winter, plan on the long end of that. A horse carriage runs all year to below the castle, on demand and with no timetable, and it's a fun option for kids. Folded pushchairs fit in the compartment on the back. From where it stops, you still face a steep walk of about 10 minutes.
Accessibility

Private tours for visitors with limited mobility

  • The Neuschwanstein tour involves about 350 steps, up and down. A lift lets you join a regular tour, but it must be reserved in advance through the Ticket Centre, for a service fee of €2.50. It runs once an hour, and because demand is high it's currently kept for wheelchair users and visitors with severe mobility impairments, who must show a valid disability certificate.
  • The official recommendation for visitors with limited mobility is the horse carriage, not the shuttle bus. The walk down from the bus stop above the castle is very steep. The carriages have no ramp, so you need to be able to climb in, alone or with help.
  • Private cars can't drive up to the castle, even for visitors with limited mobility, so a door-to-door tour ends in Hohenschwangau village.
  • Hohenschwangau Castle has about 180 steps (90 up, 90 down) and no lift, so it isn't suitable for wheelchair users.
  • Tell your operator about mobility needs when you book. Ask whether the vehicle is accessible, and whether they'll help with the lift reservation.

Private tour checklist

  • Driver or guide? Check the exact wording.
  • Castle tickets: included, booked for you, or yours to arrange?
  • Slot time: ask for 10:00 or 11:00 for the best winter light and the fewest people.
  • Vehicle: size, child seats (ask in advance) and accessibility.
  • Winter plan: what happens if the bridge or the Plansee road is closed?
  • Cancellation: usually free up to 24 hours before. Weather refunds aren't standard, because the castle opens in all weathers.
  • Cash: bring euros for the horse carriages and village stalls.
  • Dates: no tours on 24, 25 and 31 December or 1 January, when the castles are closed.

Common questions

Private Neuschwanstein tours in winter: FAQ

Is a private tour to Neuschwanstein worth it in winter?

For families, travellers with limited mobility, photographers and groups of four to six, yes. Flexible timing, hotel pickup and a driver who waits matter more on short winter days, when the shuttle bus often isn't running.

Can a private guide take me inside Neuschwanstein?

No. The castle interior can only be visited on the official timed tour, led by castle staff or with an audio guide. Private guides go with you to the entrance and meet you afterwards.

Do private Neuschwanstein tours include castle tickets?

Many do, but not all. Some listings sell a private driver only and leave you to book the castle ticket yourself. Always check the inclusions.

How much does a private Neuschwanstein tour cost?

Private tours are the most expensive option per person. Because the price is often per vehicle, a group of four to six can pay close to small-group tour prices per head. Check current prices on the booking page.

Are private Neuschwanstein tours wheelchair accessible?

Some vehicles are accessible. Neuschwanstein has a lift that must be reserved in advance, and it is currently kept for wheelchair users and visitors with severe mobility impairments who show a disability certificate. Hohenschwangau Castle has no lift and isn't wheelchair accessible. Tell the operator about your needs when you book.

What's the best time slot to book on a private winter tour?

The first slots of the day, 10:00 to 11:00, give you the most daylight, the fewest people and time for viewpoints afterwards.
